Too often do student-athletes send out letters or emails to coaches with unprofessional language. Not only does it reflect poorly on the student-athlete, it makes coaches reconsider recruiting the athlete for their program. Here are the do's and don'ts for contacting coaches in a professional manner.
Do: Send out letters of interest to your top picks.
Don't: Generalize your letters to all coaches.
Make sure that the letters you write are tailored to the college of your choice and that it can stand out amongst hundreds of emails. The last thing you want to do is Bcc 20+ coaches on the same email. Make sure you highlight different aspects about the school and the team that you like or pick out characteristics that make you a good fit for that program.
Do: Email or call coaches directly.
Don't: Use inappropriate language or dialogue.
Make sure that your email address is appropriate to share with a coach (i.e. [first name][last name]@[provider].com). Definitely avoid any email addresses that include vulgarity. All of the dialogue you exchange with coaches should be professional and tailored to the interest of the coach.
Do: Share your social media pages.
Don't: Post inappropriate images or comments that could scare coaches off.
Regardless of whether or not you plan to share your social media pages with coaches, such as Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram, these sites should be clean of anything that jeopardize your chances of being recruited. Coaches want dedicated athletes that are responsible and mature. Don't let a single post jeopardize a scholarship opportunity!
