The Importance Of Learning From Your Mistakes

Athletes can often be their own worst enemies, particularly when they let their emotions run high and negatively affect the quality of their performance. Being confident in yourself and having the mental resiliency to stay level headed when things are going poorly is crucial to always performing at your best.

When something goes wrong you need to be able to quickly bounce back and move on to the next play. What is in the past is in the past and there is nothing you can do to change it. The best thing you can do is to ensure you don't make the same mistake again and that you continue to give 110% moving forward.

After you have made a mistake, quickly replay it in your head and figure out how to avoid making the same error in the future.  Then, count to 5 as you focus on clearing your mind. Once you reach 5 it is time to move on. If you play a fast-paced sport that does not afford you a 5 second break to compose yourself, do not even think about your mistake, make a mental note to deal with once your game is over and come back to it later.

Mistakes are a regular part of sports and life. That is why you practice, train, scrimmage and play. From your mistakes and your drive to prevent mistakes you will improve as a player and reach the next level. It is about hard effort and putting yourself in those tough situations where you can, and you will, make a mistake; from those mistakes you will become faster, stronger, wiser and in the end a better athlete.
