Last spring, I had the opportunity to travel with the organization Shirts Across America to rebuild houses in New Orleans, LA. Despite the years since Hurricane Katrina, neighborhoods like the Lower Ninth Ward are still trying to recover thirteen years later. This year, I am continuing my work with SAA as both a volunteer and a leader within the organization. It is my goal to spread awareness for the people who are still suffering from the effects of Katrina and help families of the Lower Ninth Ward finally return home through rebuilding houses. By immersing myself into the spirited and resilient community of New Orleans, I have learned what it really means to persevere as a community. My experience and time spent serving New Orleans is extremely important to me because I know that Shirts Across America's efforts are not going unnoticed. We unite families and create lifelong friendships between the people we meet, something which is extremely similar to how it feels to be part of a team in rowing - we all strive to achieve a common goal, and in reaching this goal we create lifelong relationships with our teammates. This idea of unity between Shirts Across America and New Orleans is what keeps me motivated and eager to serve each year.
