Leadership is a key skill whether it is being involved in a team sport or working on a group project. As a libero/DS for my school and private club team, I have discerned that a factor of winning and improving overall as a team can be decided on my leadership skills and attitude. Leadership in volleyball can mean directing players who are unsure of her position in specific rotations, motivating my teammates when we are down by a couple of points during a game, but most importantly it is being the one to create the momentum of earning points during a game. Leadership skills can be also used in practice, but my belief is that it all comes down to the actual game. Similarly, off the court, I participate in the theatre club and I am the main sound operator. I have only been working this job for two years now, however, it has been one of the best decision to work as a sound operator. I can operate it alone, but I usually have my assistant work with me for large productions. Even though it may be only two of us, I have learned that with leadership, there is also communication that is an important aspect as well. Without any communication between us, we will never be able to get our tasks done. I sometimes compare the theatre community that I am part of, to my volleyball team. Even though one of them is not a sport, both involve teamwork and excellent communication skills to get the job done. With that, I allow myself to bring my leadership skills to the court to the soundboard.
