Additional Questions:
Why do you want to be recruited to play sports in college?

I hope to be recruited to run in college because I enjoy the personal and team commitment that it brings. Not only am I accountable to myself during a race, but to my teammates. Running in high school has helped me to develop a greater sense of perseverance and maturity, and I hope to continue this in college.

Athletes are often leaders on and off the field. Please provide one example of how you have demonstrated leadership in both areas.

This year, my varsity team had two freshmen and a sophomore. I was given the opportunity to give advice and stories from my experience as a freshman on varsity. I believe that leadership on a team goes beyond the captains and is channeled by one-on-one teammate relationships. I was able to help lead my three younger teammates in terms of form, racing strategy, and goal setting. One of my best experiences with leadership was my time as club president of my school's Students for Literacy Club. I started the club as a way to raise funds and raise awareness for local and national illiteracy rates. By managing other club officers, meetings, and fund raisers, I developed a greater degree of responsibility and confidence in my ability to oversee others.

Please explain how you pursue "healthy athletic performance" as a student-athlete.

A belief that both my coach and I hold in all aspects of running is that health and physical wellness must come first. I refrain from overtraining during practice or surpassing my physical limits while weight training. I've learned that knowing one's personal signs of illness and injury is extremely important. I have had shin splints in the past and had to adjust my form and training accordingly. Another important aspect of health for an athlete is refraining from any and all substance abuse and physically dangerous activities. I've found that the commitment to our team has caused both my teammates and I to lead healthier and safer lifestyles.

Please describe how you are involved in service in your community and why these efforts are important to you.

I am part of my school's National Honor Society, which gives me opportunities to volunteer in local schools and nonprofit organizations. I am also a part of an organization called Student to Student that helps foreign exchange students to adjust. Most of my volunteer work has been targeted at tutoring and student assistance, as I enjoy helping younger children to learn and succeed. I have also spent a considerable amount of time volunteering at my church and other charity events.
